In recent years, I have become increasingly interested in found sounds - such as natural sounds that are not necessarily produced with any musical intent - and I wanted to create a piece by manipulating various characteristics of an already compelling sound source. The source used in "Atlantis SRB" is from a NASA shuttle launch video. Four cameras and microphone were attached to the solid rocket boosters on the space shuttle Atlantis. The video begins with the shuttle climbing up through the atmosphere and, after the boosters' separation, shows a long fall back to Earth. I found the video alone quite captivating and decided to process the sounds from the microphone in an attempt to enhance my perception the images.
